Social Supports.
Social supports play a crucial role in stress management. Having a strong network of friends, family, and colleagues can provide emotional comfort and practical assistance during challenging times. Engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing experiences, and receiving encouragement can help individuals cope with stress more effectively. By combining social supports with effective stress management strategies, individuals can create a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
There are a decent amount of social supports you can try to help ease your stress levels.
- Emotional Support: This is when someone offers empathy, care, love, and encouragement. Think about those heart-to-heart conversations you have with a close friend after a rough day. Emotional support helps you feel understood and less alone in your struggles.
- Instrumental Support: This type of support refers to practical assistance, like someone helping you with chores or driving you to an appointment.
- Informational Support: This involves sharing knowledge or offering problem-solving strategies to help you navigate challenges. Such as asking someone for help or guidance.
- Companionship Support: This type of support involves spending time with others to reduce feelings of isolation. It’s not necessarily about solving a problem, but rather about having someone around to share experiences with.

Physical Activity and Exercise.
Why is exercise important? Physical activity has many important health benefits. Exercise can boost your mood, improve your sleep, and even help control your appetite. Along with helping prevent many long term illnesses such as, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, depression, and many types of cancer! Improving your over-all physical health has shown benefits to improving your sex life, and is linked to a longer life.
For the elderly, exercise is one of the best things they can do for themselves. It is linked to maintaining a healthy blood pressure, keeps harmful plaque from building up in your arteries, reduces inflammation, improves blood sugar levels, strengthens bones, and helps stave off depression (LeWine, 2024).
According to Harvard Medical School, there are four broad types of exercise you can do!
- Aerobic Exercises: Aerobic exercises get your heart rate up, and strengthen your lungs. This can include activities such as walking, jogging or running, cycling, swimming, dancing, jumping rope, cardio classes, or circuits.
- Strength Training Exercises: These exercises should only be preformed 2-3x a week. This is also called resistance training. This can consist of squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows, leg-lifts, or push-ups. These are usually done on machines that can create some form of resistance, to help maintain or build muscle mass.
- Stretching Exercises: Stretching helps improve flexibility, joint motion, circulation, and helps reduce the risk or injury during a workout. Stretching can include calf stretches, hamstring stretches, quadricep stretches, hip stretches, or knee stretches.
- Balance Exercises: Balance exercises include the inner ear, vision, muscles and joints, allowing you to maintain control over your body. Yoga, Tia Chi, and Pilates, are examples of balance exercises.

Relaxation.
Relaxation allows your body to slow down, promotes repair, and restores balance. Relaxation is controlled by the vagus nerve (which is part of your parasympathetic nervous system), and triggers the body's rest and digest response. This response lowers the heart rate and promotes relaxation. When you relax, cortisol levels decrease, blood pressure drops, muscle tension decreases, sleep quality increases, and your immune system gets stronger. Anxiety and depression have also shown to decrease with relaxation.
