Coping with Stress: Practical Strategies

Stress is a natural part of life, but how we cope with it makes all the difference. At The Clear Canopy, I believe in fostering resilience through thoughtful strategies. This section explores common approaches to help you find balance and peace.

Different Coping Strategies.

Anticipatory Coping.

Anticipatory coping is when we worry about things that have not happened yet. Have you ever worried about "what if?". That is anticipatory coping! Even if the event isn't real, or hasn't happened yet, the stress response is the same as if it were real, or were happening. This includes elevated cortisol, increased heart rate, and muscle tension. The imagined stress or future event can be days, weeks or months down the road. Prolonged worry can damage the body's immune system. This can keep the body's stress system activated long after worrying stops. Leading to immune surpression and cardivascular issues.

SYMPTOMS

  • Increased heartrate
  • Blood pressure rises
  • Breathing becomes slower
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Butterfly feeling in the stomach
  • Muscle tension
  • Insomnia
  • Cold/sweaty palms
  • heightened senses

Emotion-Focused Coping.

Emotional-focused coping is using skills for processing and understanding emotions and feelings. This can include journaling, meditating, or positive thinking. Emotional-focused coping strategies focus on regulating negative emotions, and help you better understand the way you're feeling. Altering the way you experience negative situations or emotions, emotional-focused coping aims to help you reduce anxiety, fear, sadness and anger.

TYPES OF EMOTIONAL-FOCUSED COPING:

  • Journaling
  • Going for a walk
  • Talking with a friend
  • Listening to music
  • Meditation
  • Positive thinking
  • Try art
  • Exercise
  • Deep breathing exercises

BENEFITS:

  • You don't have to wait to find relief: With emotion-focused coping, we don't need to wait for our lives to change or work on changing the inevitable. We can simply find ways to accept what we face right now, and not let it bother us.
  • It reduces chronic stress: This can cut down on chronic stress, as it gives the body a chance to recover from what might otherwise be too-high levels of stress.
  • It can improve decision-making: It allows us to think more clearly and access solutions that may not be available if we are feeling overwhelmed. Because stressed people do not always make the most effective decisions, emotion-focused coping can be a strategy to get into a better frame of mind before working on problem-focused techniques.

Problem-Focused Coping.

Problem-focused coping is using skills to target the root cause of the stressor. There are many benefits to problem-focused coping, from reducing the stressful situation, to motivating you to leave a bad situation. In short, they are stress management strategies to deal with stress.

BIG MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES:

  1. Write a list of all the things that stress you out, that way you can see them word for word. Sometimes it puts things into perspective, when you can see them in front of you.
  2. Learn to pause more often. When we pause, we allow our nervous system to relax a bit. This can decrease the chance of your fight or flight response activating.
  3. Prioritizing your own needs and goals is something we often forget to do. By allowing yourself to finish what you started, or what you need to get done. You are avoiding a stressful situation down the road.
  4. Change your social circles. Sometimes the people you keep close to you, are actually becoming the problem. If someone is adding more stress than you can handle, it may be time to reconsider who you associate with.
  5. Change your career. Sometimes where we work is the biggest stressor of all. I've always said, "find something you love, and make it your life". Make sure you are happy working at your job!

SMALL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES:

  • Studying to reduce test anxiety
  • Changing unhealthy eating habits
  • Not working on the weekends
  • Learning to say no
  • Establish healthy boundaires
  • Create a study schedule
  • Create a budget
  • Create a to-do list
  • Seek support
